This is a plain-language privacy policy. We’ve tried to make it readable because most privacy policies are written to confuse you, and that helps no one.
What we collect
- Comments: If you leave a comment, we store your name, email, and the comment text. Your email is never shown publicly and never sold.
- Newsletter signups: If you subscribe, we store your email address. We use it to send you the newsletter. Nothing else.
- Server logs: Our hosting provider logs basic request data (IP address, user agent, requested URL) for security and debugging. These logs are rotated and not sold to anyone.
- Cookies: We use a small number of cookies to keep the site working (login state, comment form). We don’t use third-party advertising cookies.
What we don’t collect
- We don’t run third-party advertising networks.
- We don’t sell your data to data brokers. Ever.
- We don’t track you across other sites.
- We don’t use fingerprinting or other sneaky tracking techniques.
Analytics
We may use a privacy-friendly analytics tool (such as Plausible or a self-hosted Matomo) to count page views. If we do, it runs without cookies and does not identify you personally. We will update this section when analytics is enabled.
Embedded content from other sites
Articles on this site may include embedded content (YouTube videos, tweets, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves the same as if you visited the other website directly. Those sites may collect data about you, use cookies, and track your interaction. We try to link out instead of embed when we can.
Affiliate links
If we ever recommend a paid product, we may earn a small commission if you buy through our link. This costs you nothing extra. We will always mark these links clearly and only recommend things we actually use.
AI-generated content
Some articles on this site are drafted with AI assistance and reviewed by a human editor before publication. We label AI-assisted articles where it materially affects the reader’s trust. We do not publish fully AI-generated content without human review.
Your rights
You can request a copy of any personal data we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Email info@humanrequired.org and we’ll get back to you within 7 days.
If you’re in the EU or UK, GDPR and UK GDPR apply. If you’re in California, CCPA/CPRA applies. Both grant you the rights above and more.
Data retention
We keep personal data only as long as we have a reason to. In practice:
- Contact form submissions: messages sent via the contact form go to our email inbox (info@humanrequired.org) and are not stored in any database on this site. They are kept in the email account until we have replied and any follow-up is closed, then deleted. If you would like a message deleted sooner, email us.
- Server logs: our hosting provider keeps standard access logs (IP address, user agent, requested URL, response code) for up to 30 days for security and debugging. Logs are not shared with third parties and are deleted automatically after the retention window.
- Backups: site backups are retained for up to 90 days. Backups are encrypted at rest and are deleted on a rolling schedule. If you want a backup containing your data purged sooner, email us and we will do it within 7 days.
- Cookies: we do not currently set any non-essential cookies. If we add analytics or third-party embeds in future, we will update this section and the cookies page with the specific retention period.
If you want any data we hold about you erased, email info@humanrequired.org and we will action it within 7 days.
Children’s privacy
This site is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children.
Changes to this policy
If we make material changes, we’ll update the date at the top and explain the change. We won’t silently expand what we collect.
